The Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland
The Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland (the MIBI) is a non-profit-making Irish-registered company set up by Agreement between the Government and the Irish motor insurance companies. The first Agreement was signed in 1955 and there have been subsequent Agreements in 1964, 1988 and 2004.
The Bureau compensates innocent victims of accidents caused by uninsured and unidentified vehicles. This main function of MIBI is regulated by the terms of an Agreement with the Minister for Transport (2004). This Agreement has the same effect as legislation and gives rights to a person who sustains loss or is injured in a motor accident caused by an uninsured or untraced motorist
The Bureau is responsible for operating the Green Card System in Ireland. As the Green Card Bureau for Ireland, the MIBI ensures that Irish citizens who sustain loss or are injured in accidents caused by foreign-registered vehicles here are not disadvantaged. The MIBI compensates such injured parties under the terms of the regulations signed with comparable organisations in the European Economic Area.
MIBI operates the Motor Insurance Information Centre of Ireland. The MIICI assists Irish residents who have sustained damage or injury in an accident in another EU Member State by providing information on the insurer of the foreign vehicle at fault and the claims representative for that insurer in Ireland.
All insurance companies underwriting motor insurance in Ireland must, by law, be members of MIBI and contribute to funding for claims in proportion to market share.
The terms of the 2004 Motor Insurers Bureau are very strict. Claims can fail unless the Claimant Claimant Also known as the Plaintiff, he is the party who makes a Calims / issues proceedings in a civil law action. complies with those strict terms. Because the Claimant must be aware of his obligations before making a Claim he should consult a Solicitor immediately and particularly in advance of submitting his Claim to the InjuriesBoard.ie (previously known as the Personal Injuries Assessment Board). At Morgan McManus we will ensure that all proper notices are served in compliance with the 2004 Agreement and that the question of insurance cover is resolved as quickly as possible.

The Motor Insurers Bureau in the UK (the MIB), which covers road traffic claims in Northern Ireland as well as the rest of the United Kingdom, was established in 1946 as a private company limited by guarantee for the purpose of entering into agreements with the Government to compensate the victims of negligent uninsured and untraced motorists.

The Motor Insurers' Bureau is a fund of last resort and as such will consider claims for property damage and injury where compensation cannot be claimed from another source. The Bureau's obligation is to handle claims in accordance with the agreements between MIB and the Government. MIB is restricted to paying compensation Compensation An amount awarded by a court or tribunal if your employer has treated you in a way that breaks employment law or breaches your contract, sometimes called damages in respect of liability for property damage or injury arising from an accident that has occurred either on a road or a public place in accordance with the Road Traffic Act 1988 and subsequent regulations.
